Close-Up — People want to see how you look like up close. Ideally want to capture photos that also feature your chest and shoulders and a little extra space. A photo like this can show your favorite spots around town and possibly spark a conversation about a place the other person loves or has been wanting to explore.
The best photos focus more on excitement, backgrounds and uniqueness rather than perfect lighting and poses. Pro-tip: Follow publications like Eater so you know which places are trending and which ones people are craving. An epic snowboarding fail, failing into a wet cement pit or spilling something on your shirt in the proper frame and context can show you are not insecure. Pro-tip: Friends are great to capture these photos as they are more about the moment than they are about taking a perfect, well-lite, framed photo.
People want to see your physique, your face, your smile, your style. Avoid taking photos with harsh shadows around the eyes or using a camera phone flash as those create raccoon eyes, highlight oily skin and give off the deer in the headlight looks which is never flattering. This is a great way to show that you have interests beyond what is said in words in a profile or prompts. Giving back is an easy way to get some good photos usually others are taking photos during volunteer events.
Smile, Smile, Smile — First impressions are everything. Angry, narcissistic, self-absorbed photos are generally a turn-off.
A healthy balance between confident and approachable photos are ideal. A good smile can instantly make you more attractive. The biggest complaint I get from women are that guys seem too uptight and intense. Locking jaws, trying to pose like a model or looking away is an obvious sign of insecurity. There are plenty of other photos to use that can be even more effective. While selfies are generally not recommended, they can be great if you take one with a celebrity or happen to have one in an epic setting i.
hot springs bath with snow monkeys in Japan, photo-bombing in the background or a good prop or article of clothing that conveys additional detail of travel, hometowns or inexplicable connections. The best photos are ones that suggest a candid moment in time rather than giving off the appearance you asked someone to take the photo of you.
Trying too hard can offset a perfectly good photo. Photos are about personality and lifestyle more so than trying to structure the technical aspects of lighting, angles, sharpness and framing. If you are having trouble figuring out how to order the photos, choose your main profile photo or take new photos, I offer dating profile critiques to clients.
Photos that are clear, bright, show your body, face, hobbies, interests but do so naturally and candidly are best. Photos that appear effortless and in the moment rather than posed, staged are ones you should seek.

We all know the Kardashians whether you like them or not always make appearances looking their best, and if you follow any of their social media platforms you'll discover that looking their best is courtesy of spending 2 hours with their "glam squad" and this is just to have them visit the backyard and drink tea.
Yes, you want to look your best in your photos but not over produced. Ladies, If you go with hair and make up for your online dating photos make sure it's still YOU that comes across in the pics. There's nothing wrong with being a little extra but if you go all out Kardashian, then you better make sure that's who showing up each and every time you go out on a date, and marriage, and life.
Guys, my advice for you is to do the opposite. Men rarely glam up for their pics and that needs to change. I'm not talking about make up or adding anything fake, but make sure your skin is nicely moisturized and looks healthy.
Because I use natural lighting, it does offer some forgiveness if you don't have great skin who does? but you want to help it along by not looking dry and blotchy in your photos. Also, I'll usually ask that you bring some chapstick along only to prime the lips and guarantee they look lively. I will always suggest you wear color in your online dating profile photos, yes, even if you live in New York City. It's been scientifically proven that humans are attracted to color and the bolder the better.
In a sea of dullness, you will stand out. A red top for the ladies or a bold blue button down for the fellas - that splash of color will certainly work to your advantage. Okay, here's where it gets tricky.
We want the dating photos to look as candid as possible so if we are working together, I will not have you place your hand under your chin and smile.
This isn't the time to relive your senior photo session when you graduated high school. I won't be asking the ladies to stand in the Wonder Woman pose while looking to the side -- it's just not natural.
Online dating photos should come across as under produced -- a good online dating photo doesn't look staged or overly composed.
That's why I suggest natural lighting, simple backdrops, and natural occurring pose. Okay, maybe a little. If you have a blemish that's not normally there, sure, go for it. But changing the shape of your nose, slimming down the waist, or removing things you think are flaws are just not authentic. And starting a dating life like that won't get you far. I'll adjust the contrast, fix a dark patch with brighter lighting here and there -- but no major photo editing.
Besides, trust me, you don't need it -- you are amazingly perfect as is! And when you find the right person for you -- they will tell you so. Whether you work with me, another photographer, or a friend -- your online dating photos are an important element that will make that first impression--so you want to get it right.
I've been doing this for over seven years and I've had more than 5 clients contact me to do their wedding photos after I did their dating profile shots saying their dates, now future partners, claim their photo is what made them click on their profile or swipe right. DATING ABOUT REVIEWS BLOG CONTACT. Here are my 5 tips for creating your best online dating profile photo.
Academic studies can be fascinating and totally confusing. So we decided to strip away all of the scientific jargon and break them down for you. The Background Studies -- as well as anecdotes from my social circle -- suggest that online daters consider profile pictures on dating sites the most important component for attraction , so selecting the right one can be an oddly daunting task.
You want to pick a photo that's flattering, but not one that's so flattering and taken at just the right angle on the best hair day of your life that it deceptively looks more like Natalie Portman than you. If profile pictures are so important, it's easy to wonder what people assume about you from a single curated snapshot. The Setup In a recent study , researchers from the University of Connecticut decided to figure out how attractive profile pictures affect a dater's perceptions of a potential mate, so they crafted two versions of a male and female online dating profile.
In a second version of each profile, the same man and woman's images were not enhanced. The researchers then brought in male and female heterosexual singles to simulate the online dating browsing experience in a lab. Each group of men and women were split in half. One half of each gender group was shown the opposite sex profile with an enhanced profile picture, and the other half was shown the same profiles with profile pictures that weren't enhanced.
All of the groups were asked if they were attracted to the man or woman in the profile, how trustworthy they thought that person seemed and whether or not they'd like to date that person. The Findings The not-so-shocking finding: Both groups of men and women in the study overwhelmingly considered the enhanced profile pictures more attractive. However, the men considered the dolled-up, Instagram-filtered woman less trustworthy than her unenhanced counterpart.
The enhanced woman was "too hot to trust," according to the researchers, who noted that the men might also think the woman in the photo was deceiving online daters and wasn't really that hot in person.
The women, on the other hand, felt that the man in the enhanced profile picture was more trustworthy than the unenhanced version of the same man. But no matter how participants felt about their potential date's trustworthiness, perceived attractiveness of the profile picture was the most important factor in determining whether or not they wanted to date the person in the photo.
The Takeaway The pressure to be hot in your online dating profile picture is real. But for women, it can be a damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't situation. Be hot and dateable, and you're not trustworthy.
Be plain and trustworthy, and you're not dateable. There's really no winning. Restructure your life priorities accordingly. Skip to Main Content ×. Main Menu U. News U.
